The many shades of the NSWG through to Freight Rail
While we welcome any other Australian or International models on our layout the majority continues to be NSW orientated trains. Commodities can range from bulk trains such as coal and grain, which still run to this day but you can see examples of traffic lost to road many years ago including milk, fuel and produce. Is steam still a thing?
While the majority of operations we see these days are diesel hauled, steam is definitely still seen on the Sydney Model Railway Society layout. While regular steam service on the NSWGR ceased in the 1970's there continues to be immense public interest in heritage steam operations but they have specific needs which makes operation logistically challenging. Adding lots of colour to our trains
Following on from our previous post today we are featuring many of the private freight operators who are now common place across Australia. Many started from former government owned and operated systems and have evolved over time for example National Rail which was a consortium of NSW, VIC and the federal government but once sold became Pacific National with several owners since.
